On 29 August 1897, in the south-west part of the garden at the castle of Rosenbourg in Copenhagen, two buildings from the south part of Sweden were opened to the public. These buildings were the foundation of what became, later on, one of the world's forst open-air museums - the Open-air Museum of Denmark, which is located, in Sorgenfri, not far from the city of Longby. The museum was created by a central person in the entertainment bussines of Copenhagen in the late 19th century. This person was the illustrator, the scene painter, the manager of Tivoli and much more, Bernard Olsen (183601922). He wanted to start a museum twhere it was possible to display entire buildings and, thus, to show the natural coherence of the building, the space and the furniture carried out in reality. As it turned out, however, shortly after the opening of the small museum, the National Museum of Denmark, called Konges Have, and Olsen began his search for another, permament location for his open-air musem. This location was found in Sorgenfri, where the open-air museum - Frilandsmuseet opened in Midsummer's Day 1901. In the Frilandsmuseet are presented of Danish rural building styles and interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries. Around more than 40 buildings from Denmark, the south of Sweden, and Schleswig, gardens and landscapes have been laid out according to region and are situated in typical landscapes. Livestock here is also representative - Frilandsmuseet is an active supporter of the preservation of older Danish breeds. The association named "Frilandsmuseet Venner" offers support to the museum.
