W pracy przedstawiono charakterystykę trójfunkcyjnych konwertorów katalitycznych z wkładem metalicznym, do silników spalinowych. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na sposoby zapewnienia efektywności działania katalizatorów w zakresie konwersji substancji szkodliwych, poprzez stosowanie odpowiednich materiałów, technologii ich wytwarzania oraz odpowiednich rozwiązań technicznych. W dalszej części opracowania, wskazano na dodatkowe możliwości poprawy funkcjonowania katalizatorów metalicznych, będące przedmiotem wielu badań lub wyznaczające ich kierunek. Przeprowadzono porównanie katalizatorów metalicznych i ceramicznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tych cech konwertorów metalicznych, które czynią je zdecydowanie konkurencyjnymi w stosunku do ceramicznych i zadecydują o ich silnej pozycji rynkowej w najbliższej przyszłości.

Steps in the direction of enforcement of stronger lows regulating the emission of toxic substances into the atmosphere through combustion gases has been the impetus in the advancement and optimization in systems controlling the emissions of combustion gases. In the study the characteristic of the three-way converter for fuel engines was presented. Particular attention was given to the methods of ensuring the effectiveness of the catalytic converter in the field of conversion of toxic substances through the application of suitable materials; technology used in their production and in suitable technical solutoins. In particular it was shown how the design parameters influenced the functioning of the catalytic converter. The next part of the work highlights the additional possibilities in the improvement of the functioning of the metal catalytic converters being the studies and or indicating their course. This concerns the application of e.g. alternative fuels, different systems of fuel supply, the use of catalytic converters in small 2 and 4 stroke engines, computer simulations of the influence of variable parameters on work effectivenessof the catalytic converter. A comparison between metallic and ceramic catalyst converters with particular attention given to specific properties of the metallic converters, which have decidedly become competitive in relation to ceramic converters and will decide their stronger market position in the near future.
