Relationships between trophic indicators and phytoplankton composition, biomass and photosynthetic activity in small eutrophic lakes

The work presents regression equations derived from studies of eight eutrophic lakes in NE Poland. Spring phytoplankton biomass was found to be inversely correlated with its photosynthetic activity, and with the total nitrogen: total phosphorus ratio, as well as being correlated positively with primary production and the biomass of diatoms. Summer biomass was dependent on spring concentrations of total P, the biomass of blue-green algae and the photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton. Gross primary production in spring and summer was mainly determined by spring concentrations of total P, as well as by phytoplankton biomass in spring and by the total N: total P ratio in summer. The spring photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton was correlated with spring total P, and the summer activity with total N. Both equations revealed an inverse relationship between activity on the one hand and production and Secchi-disc visibility on the other.
