Morphotypical diversity and morphometric characteristics of Keratella cochlearis (Glosse, 1851) in stratified lakes

Rotifer Keratella cochlearis was observed in 53 out 54 lakes investigated in June-July 1988. Up to 4 morphotypes were simultaneously present in the vertical water column in mesotrophic lakes with a relic crustacean complex. There were from 1 to 3 morphotypes in other mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes and from 0 to 2 porphotypes in dystrophic ones. The lorica length of Keratella cochlearis morphotype increases with temperature decrease in the vertical water column in stratified lakes. A high correlation between these parameters is shown for one lake by the data of different years. Distribution of lorica length frequencies in separate layers of the vertical water column has a polymodal pattern. The change in an individual size is observed in consecutive parthenogenetic generations of K. c. cochlearis that is indicative of phenotypical plasticity of morphotype.
