Between man and the place of his living there may be a special emotional relationship which gives man the feeling of 'being at home'. Between poeple attached in this way to a common place there may be a relationship which gives them another dimension of homeliness - the feeling of 'being among his folks'. If there is such a relationship, the place con become an object of care of the whole community and as such has a better chance of welfare than nobody's land. The feelings of belonging can be beneficial for both man and place. The factors that affect the way how the feeling of belonging functions include architectural conditions. Although architecture does not decide of the existence of such relations, it can significantly support them or, the other way round, impede them. The idea of homeliness is to help create an architecture that would promotr real sense of belonging in individual persons and whole communities. An attempt at answering questions on how and why homeliness-friendly architecture should be created, without going beyond stricly architectural problems, is doomed to fail. Homeliness is an interdisciplinary, complex, multilayered problem. This is why the present dissertation covers both the architectural and urban design achievements and the achievements in arts and social sciences treating town as a socio-cultural reality.
