The paper presents results of the experimental investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in a circular tube, fitted with regularly spaced twisted-tape inserts connected by thin circular rods. The flow is in a horizontal tube and a uniform wall temperature has been considered. Experimental conditions are partically encountered in various industries such as process and chemical engineering and also in power generating plants. Data were obtained for water and cover a range of the Reynolds numer between 3.000 and 30.000. Presented results are compared with twisted-type inserts of the same twist pitch. These measurements, combined with the apropriate heat transfer results, enable to determine the efectiveness of a particular insert, i. e. the advantage of heat transfer augmentation against the cost of an additional pressure drop in the fluid flow.
