Czy matematyka wnosi coś do poznania? W sposób wyraźny pytanie to postawił Kant. Dedekind, ostatni z kręgu Gaussa, podjął się w słynnym dziele "Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?" eksperymentu myślowego, który miał dowieść, że liczba może być rozumiana jako coś, co nie zależy od zjawisk takich, jak przestrzeń i czas, że jest wytworem "świata naszych myśli", a zatem wytworem samej matematyki, wbudowanej w nas wewnętrznie.

Are there contributions of mathematics to the knowledge? This problem was certainly presented by Kant. It appeared later in the famous "Was sind und was sollen die Zahlen?", where Dedekind - the last student of Gauss - performed a thought experiment in order to show that the number can be produced in our mind without referring to events of the nature, in particular without referring - contrary to Kant's suggestions - to the space and time. According to Dedekind, the number is a creation of "our Gedankenwelt", thus it is a creation of the mathematics itself, regarding mathematics as a sense imprinted in our mind.
