Stimulated by disastrous floods that occurred in Europe over the last decade, the idea of developing non-structural systems of flood control as an alternative no the conventional methods is quickly acquiring new advocates, drawing from various scientific and professional disciplines. The Ecoflood project aims at a further promotion and stimulation of creating natural flood defences, contributing to the joint benefits of increased safety standards and restoration of vanishing wetland ecosystems. Being one of the project's milestones, the Warsaw conference "Towards natural flood reduction strategies" was an occasion to highlight and discuss opportunities and constraints of this approach. Based on the conference contributions, special feature papers are published in three international journals: Journal of Water and Land Development, Ecohydrology and Hydrobiology, and International Journal of River Basin Management.

W obliczu tragicznych w skutkach powodzi, które wystąpiły w Europie w ciągu ostatniej dekady, idea ekologicznych metod kontrolowania powodzi zyskuje coraz więcej zwolenników wśród reprezentantów różnych dziedzin nauki. Projekt Ecoflood ma na celu promocję tworzenia ekologicznych systemów ochrony przeciwpowodziowej, alternatywnych wobec metod konwencjonalnych, mając na względzie zarówno wzrost bezpieczeństwa życia na obszarach nadrzecznych, jak i renaturyzację zagrożonych ekosystemów mokradłowych. Będąca częścią projektu, warszawska konferencja "Towards natura flood reduction strategies" była okazją do naświetlenia i przedyskutowania możliwości i ograniczeń stosowania przyjaznych przyrodzie metod ochrony przeciwpowodziowej. Powstałe na podstawie referatów konferencyjnych artykuły są publikowane w specjalnych sekcjach trzech międzynarodowych czasopism naukowych: Journal of Water and Land Development, Ecohydrology and Hydrobiology and International Journal of River Basin Management.
