Doświadczenie upływającego czasu jest jednym z najbardziej fundamentalnych aspektów ludzkiego postrzegania świata, które decyduje o podziale czasu na trzy rozłączne kategorie, określane mianem przeszłości, teraźniejszości i przyszłości, i które odpowiada za to, że jedynie teraźniejszym zdarzeniom przyznajemy fizyczną realność, traktując zdarzenia przeszłe jako te, których już nie ma, a przyszłe - jako te, które jeszcze nie nastąpiły. Poprawności takiego rozumienia czasu nie potwierdza szczególna teoria względności, która dostarcza przekonujących argumentów za słusznością tak zwanej blokowej teorii czasu. Z koncepcji tej wynika, że czas w rzeczywistości nie upływa, i że przeszłość i przyszłość istnieją tak samo realnie jak teraźniejszość. Czy można ze sobą pogodzić te dwie, krańcowo różne, interpretacje czasu?

The experience of the flowing time is one of the most fundamental aspects of human perception, which decides about the division of time on three separable classes - the past, the present and the future - and which is responsible for the fact that we are convinced that only the present events are real and we treat both the past and future events as nonexistent. The Special Theory of Relativity does not confirm the correctness of such understanding of time. This theory provides some strong arguments for the so called block theory of time, according to which time does not flow, and both the past and the future exist as really as the present. Is it possible to reconcile with each other these two utterly different interpretations of time?
