In our world where energy demand increases each year and with an urgent need to decrease emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, fusion seems to be a significant option of future energy sources. The article gives a short historical overview of studies from early 1950s until now in the matter of harnessing energy from fusion for the use on earth. The greatest emphasis is put on the latest, highly specialized, detailed researches, which are carried out simultaneously in two ways. The first one is to broadly examine the fusion process: problems with obtaining and maintaining plasma, its instabilities, and confinement as well as to analyse final fusion products, dealing with particle exhaust. It is mostly based on the results from JET. The second one is to test materials to be used in tokamaks as they must fulfill high demands of temperature and pressure, show a low level of chemical and nuclear reactivity and an ability to withstand high neutron fluxes. Finally, the article presents plans for the future fusion power research.
