In this paper we propose a novel watermarking technique in the spatial domain using the genetic algorithm. In this method, the image is decomposed into certain blocks, and the chosen watermark is also split into parts to fit into the blocks of the image for its embedding. This technique lowers the computational complexity that normally arises with the traditional watermarking algorithms. Optimization is done using techniques from genetic algorithm and by searching for a certain parameter that represents the watermarking embedding strength. This parameter is varied to find the most suitable strength that makes the image watermark both invisible and robust. The new algorithm yields an invisible watermark that is robust to various kinds of attacks. A comparison is made with a number of other watermarking algorithms that shows the efficiency of the proposed method.
