Different approaches to a one-dimensional signal representation problem are described. Particular attention is paid to adaptive wavelet decompositions. Such a kind of approximation takes into account local properties of a signal what enables a small error representation with only a few coefficients. This makes useful to apply adaptive wavelets for compression of certain class of signals, for instance biomedical (like ECG) signals.
