Comparison of weathered marine oil spills with the original source of contamination

To solve the problem of discovering the source of oil contamination, selected groups of compounds from a weathered oil spill and from fresh oil have been compared. The suitability of n-alkanes and isoprenoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, biomarkers, and dibenzothiophenes for comparison of the content of weathered and fresh oil has been studied. Phenanthrene, dibenzothiophene, and biomarker content ratios have been found to be persistent during weathering. After selection of suitable comp-ounds from these groups spilled and fresh oil can be reliably compared.
