A systematic approach is described for the optimization of multi-component mobile phases in thin-layer chromatography (TLC), with emphasis on changes in selectivity as a result of variation of the mobile-phase strength 'regulator' and the type of stationary phase. The optimization triangle method was used to choose the optimum quaternary mobile phases exploiting the full range of selectivity effects possible for TLC separation. The separation parameters were obtained for two model mixtures of substances on silica gel and aluminium oxide adsorbents. Observation showed that the amount of separation between compounds of the series can be varied within useful limits by choice of the appropriate mobile and stationary phase, irrespective of the type of mobile-phase strength 'regulator'.
