Short review of a new concept of nuclear energy production, designed by C. Rubbia and his team, is given. An energy amplifier is a hybrid system consisting of a medium current (10 mA), medium energy (1 GeV) proton accelerator feeding a subcritical assembly consisting of thorium or another fertile element. This assembly during operation would burn all unwanted actinides and can incinerate long-lived radioactive fission products. The energy amplifier could produce energy much cheaper than nuclear or conventional power plants and more safely than e.g. coal plants.
