Opisano organizację i przebieg, zainicjowanej przez Sekcję Informacji Naukowej Biblioteki Głównej UMK w Toruniu, akcji ratowania księgozbiorów bibliotek Dolnego Śląska (Wrocław, Nysa, Opole) podczas powodzi w lecie 1997. Wskazano, że powodzenie akcji (uratowanie kilku tysięcy druków, w tym XIX-wiecznych) zależało od umiejętnego wykorzystania zarówno tradycyjnych (poczta, telefon) jak nowoczesnych środków przekazywania informacji (zwłaszcza Internetu: e-mail i listy dyskusyjne) oraz mediów (prasy, radia i telewizji). Nadzwyczajna mobilizacja ludzi i instytucji (także z zagranicy) zaowocowała również pożytkami długofalowymi, mianowicie integracją środowiska w postaci powołania Ogólnopolskiej Rady dla Ratowania Zbiorów Bibliotecznych po Powodzi i Pracowni Konserwacji Książki w Toruniu oraz rozwojem bibliotekarskich list dyskusyjnych w Internecie.

It describes the experience of the staff of Information Department, Nicholas Copernicus University Library in Toruä, Poland, during the flood of Summer 1997. The Department organized and coordinated help for the libraries of Lower Silesia (southern Poland) whose collections (printed in XIX-XX c.) were seriously damaged by the flood. It focus on the process of change in the functioning of the library Information Department, its role, organization of work, with the emphasis on the transition from spontaneous willingness to help to a coordinated aid action, planned and conducted on a longer time scale. It discuss the mean (e-mail, librarian discussin lists, newsletters, TV, Radio) that were used to gather and exchange information about damaged or endangered collections, to mobilize librarians in other academic centres to join the aid action, and to raise funds, acquire materials and facilities for the restoration of damaged prints. The use of media and Internet is treated in detail. Finally it sums up the experience and draw conclusions about efficient cooperative projects and protective measures for the future implementation (by Toruä Post-Flood Association for the Rescue of Book Collections and Archives and The Central Council for the Rescue of Book Collections and Archives and The Central Council for the Rescue of Library Collections After the Flood - Warsaw).
