Despite a large number of abrasive waterjet machining (AWJM) models developed, there still has been some confusion about the nature of how workpiece surfaces erode. It is believed that analysis of stresses generated at the AWJ cutting interface could provide a deeper insight into the erosion behaviour. The present paper presents a stress analysis of AWJM using a non-linear dynamic finite element (FE) code in order to explain the process. The main objective is to develop an erosion mechanism which would describe the abrasive-material interaction adequately. The new model considers both AWJ dynamic loading conditions and non-linear material behaviour. The results show that the workpiece material fails due to highly localised plastic deformation caused by compressive stresses, especially at the AWJ cutting interface. Also AWJM causes residual stresses to remain in the workpiece material after machining
