Filtering and segmentation are two essential steps at the start of any image processing application. Here we present tools developed in the framework of mathematical morphology to perform these two tasks. On one hand, floodings, razings, flattenings and levelings allow tailored image simplifications. On the other hand, the watershed transform, combined with various modes of flooding a gradient image constitutes a powerful segmentation tool.
