The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to some of the most outstanding and typical geological features and sites, as well as drawing attention to the countries mining history, an often-overlooked aspect of South Africa's natural heritage. The fieldtrip led by Prof. Bernd Lehmann from TU-Clausthal offered a variety of gourmet pieces in economic geology/petrology and tourism, i. e. Witwatersrand Basin (largest gold province on Earth), Vredefort Dome (largest and oldest impact structure on Earth), Kimberley, the giant Sishen iron ore mine, Cullinan diamond mine (renowned for giant gems), Bushveld Complex/platinum mines (largest layered mafic intrusion), Phalaborwa copper/phosphorus, Kruger National Park and the Barberton greenstone Belt with its famous Archean succession and its old gold camps.

Celem pracy jest wprowadzenie czytelnika w jedne z najbardziej spektakularnych, a zarazem typowych dla Afryki Południowej zjawisk i miejsc geologicznych, jak również zwrócenie uwagi na historię górnictwa tego kraju i jego naturalnego dziedzictwa przyrodniczego. Wycieczka terenowa pod kierunkiem prof. Bernd'a Lehmann'a, umożliwiła zapoznanie się z wyjątkowymi aspektami geologii i petrologii stosowanej oraz turystyki; np. basen Witwatersrand (największa prowincja złotonośna na świecie), Vredeford Dome (największa i najstarsza struktura impaktowa na świecie), Kimberley, olbrzymia kopalnia rud żelaza, kopalnia diamentów Cullinan (odnowionaze względu na unikalnie duże klejnoty), kopalnia platyny Bushveld Complex (największa intruzja warstwowanych skał maficznych), miedziowo/fosforanowy kompleks Phalaborwa, Park Narodowy Krugera i pas zieleńców Barberton ze słynną sukcesją archaiczną i starą osadą poszukiwaczy złota.
