W artykule - obok historii powstawania katastru - dokonano zestawienia różnych definicji katastru, jakie obowiązywały w polskim prawodawstwie oraz które zostały wypracowane przez organizacje międzynarodowe. Na tle tych definicji poddano analizie definicję ewidencji gruntów i budynków (katastru nieruchomości) zawartą w ustawie "Prawo geodezyjne i kartograficzne". Artykuł kończy przykład kierunków modernizacji katastru w Austrii, realizowanej przez to państwo.

In this article, in addition to the history of the cadastre, there is a comparison of different cadastre definitions that were binding in the Polish law as well as of those worked out by international organizations. Having these definitions as a background there has been analyzed the definition of the land and building register (the real estate cadastre) from the act: "Geodetic and Cartographic Law". The article ends with an example of modernization directions of the real estate cadastre in Austria adopted by this country.
