PL

W szpitalach psychiatrycznych końca XIX i początku XX wieku w Europie ogrody i kompozycje parkowe pełniły ważną rolę terapeutyczną, zarówno jeśli chodzi o kształtowanie zieleni ozdobnej, jak i użytkowej, która pozwalała na terapię pracą. Kompleksy szpitalne podlegały rozmaitym przemianom wynikającym między innymi z rozwoju psychiatrii oraz bieżących potrzeb. Dobudowywano nowe obiekty służące potrzebom chorych w obrębie ograniczonego obszaru szpitala kosztem zieleni. W wyniku studiów historycznych zaczęto doceniać ich znaczenie w historii medycyny i wartość zabytkową, co wynika również z mniej stygmatyzującego postrzegania chorób psychicznych. Wiele z tych placówek pełni nadal funkcje lecznicze, a te które zlikwidowano, są adaptowane do nowych funkcji i wciąż stanowią atrakcyjne zespoły architektoniczno-krajobrazowe. Artykuł prezentuje studia przypadków dawnych szpitali dla nerwowo chorych, w których w projektach rewaloryzacji szczególną rolę odgrywa reinterpretacja i rozwinięcie pierwotnej kompozycji ogrodowej. Przykład Arboretum w Heppenheim an der Bergstraße odnosi się do adaptacji szpitala zbudowanego w systemie korytarzowym w II poł. XIX wieku, zaś Parco di San Giovanni w Trieście to dawny szpital pawilonowy z początku XX wieku.

In mental hospitals at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century in Europe, gardens and parks served an important therapeutic role, with regard to shaping both decorative and utility greenery which allowed for occupational therapy. Hospital complexes underwent various transformations resulting from e.g. the development of psychiatry and current needs. New objects to serve the patients’ needs were added within the limited space of the hospital at the expense of greenery. As a result of historical studies their significance for the history of medicine and historic value began to be appreciated, which is also a consequence the less stigmatizing perception of mental disorders. Many of those institutions still fulfil their therapeutic functions, and those that were closed down have been adapted to new functions and still constitute attractive architectoniclandscape complexes. The article presents case studies of former lunatic asylums, in the restoration projects of which a particular role is played by reinterpretation and development of the original garden composition. The example of the Arboretum in Heppenheim an der Bergstraße describes an adaptation of a hospital built in the corridor system in the 2nd half of the 19th century, while Parco di San Giovanni in Trieste is a former pavilion hospital from the beginning of the 20th century.
