This paper discusses the issue that is currently being addressed by the conservation community and which refers to the design of archaeological shelters. Namely, the experience of the last century has shown that a poor choice of materials and lack of adequate pre-design studies resulted in insufficient protection of relics and even generated harmful microclimates in almost 50% of the cases. Therefore, the understanding that even open or semi-open protective structures change the environmental conditions under the shelter is the basis for appropriate action. It is now believed that pre-design studies related to the identification of climatic conditions and associated risks, in addition to the analysis of the state of preservation of relics, should be a requirement and standard procedure, without which no conservation project should be developed at an archaeological site.
