The paper presents the mathematical basis of electromagnetic field modelling over the lossy ground. The model of a cylindrical wave propagating around a lightning return-stroke channel is used for calculations. This paper describes the mathematical basis for modelling the phenomenon of propagation of the field above the ground. To determine the component of the electric field over the lossy ground, there is applied Rubinstein and Cooray-Rubinstein approach. Comparison of the results obtained for selected parameters of the lossy ground and different distances from the point of striking is presented.
