Modelling of petroleum systems offers possibility of quantitative prediction of undiscovered petroleum potential and contouring traps prospective for new hydrocarbon discoveries. In the light of the huge amount of parameters which are subjected to synthesising, necessary conditions for reliable reconstruction of a petroleum system are provided by developing optimal conceptual models and methods of data processing, among others by means of numerical programs which enable rapid testing of alternative interpretative versions. This problem is of essential importance with regard to the Carpathians, the petroleum system of which was forming synchronously with compression and erosion processes oh the flysh formations. Analysis of the reconstructed models of subsidence and thermal histories has revealed that the individual systems of thrusts gave rise to the separation, in the Late Paleogene, of integral petroleum subsystems which were differing in their primary hydrocarbon potentials. Each of the subsystems charged with hydrocarbons the nearest structural culminations and gave evidence of differentiated but generally high degrees of impedance. In the context of the above problems, substantial and methodological implications of reconstruction of the structural evolution, calibration of the thermal history, and assessment of losses of the primary hydrocarbon potential have been discussed.
