The Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) phenomena, caused by solar storms, triggered unknown effects in 19th century. Nowadays, it is much better understood what is inducing GIC, but it is still hard to predict the scale of the threat for the devices vulnerable to its effects. Article describes that solar storms can be a threat for TSOs, using blackouts at Quebec and Malmo as examples. There is a few GIC recorders in Polish Power System which constantly register the data regarding the GIC flow. Records measured during the severe geomagnetic storm in 2015 are shown and some recommendations regarding reducing the damaging effects of GIC for TSOs are also proposed.
