The energy transformation resulting from the European Union's policy poses many challenges for Poland. Apart from the obvious one, a need to develop renewable energy sources, it is equally important to provide energy security. This entails having enough power in the power system, which can be provided by controllable power plants only. Due to historical reasons most Polish power plants are coal-fired, which has recently become public enemy number one. However, owing to demanding investments in the energy sector, both in financial and time respect, the situation is not possible to be changed overnight. It is then necessary to maintain at least some of these units to ensure energy security. The problem the oldest units face, however, is scarce revenue. The article discusses the analysis of the interdependencies between the 100/200 MW class units and wind power plants and the 500/1000 MW class units. Also, the article points out other factors triggering the disadvantageous situation of the oldest units.
