Koleje japońskie stosują dwa rozstawy szyn - 1067 mm i 1435 mm, przy czym linie Shinkansen były budowane od początku jako normalnotorowe (linie nowe, budowane od podstaw), a linie konwencjonalne - jako wąskotorowe. Jednak od tej reguły są wyjątki: linia Nagasaki Shinkansen jest planowana jako linia normalnotorowa i powstanie przez konwersję linii dotychczasowej (Nagasaki Main Line). Dodatkowo dwie linie Shinkansen - Akita i Yamagata - powstały przez konwersję linii o rozstawie 1067 mm.

Three prototype of high- speed train Shinkansen equipped in variable gauge system (1435/1067 mm) have been built until 2014 in Japan, known as Free Gauge Train (FGT). A technology of variable gauge adapted for FGT was based on Spanish Talgo system. However, simple adaptation the Talgo system proved impossible, and tests of FGT on Shinkansen (1435 mm) and conventional (1067 mm) rail network were longer than primary expected. Additionally, many technical problems occurred in FGT, especially with bogies stability on rail gauge of 1067 mm. Authorities of Japan Railways (Kyushu and West) are intended to implement FGT and variable gauge system, because rail network construction in Japan is expensive (necessity of many tunnels boring and bridges building), and potential using of FGT may lower costs of high speed rail exploitation and increase passengers number in Shinkansen trains in Japan.
