Assessment of the potential geological hydrogen occurrences in the Lower Silesian Block
Języki publikacji
Abstrakty
The energy transformation encourages companies to invest in alternative energy sources, including hydrogen and related technologies. The article provides an overview of the current knowledge about selected occurrences of geological hydrogen worldwide and the processes responsible for its formation, such as serpentinization of ultramafic rocks and radiolysis of water. The Lower Silesian Block with various complexes of crystalline rocks (both igneous and metamorphic) is an interesting region for prospecting for geological hydrogen occurrences. The geological structure of the Lower Silesian Block resembles in many cases the geological settings known from occurrence of natural H2 around the world. Through comparison, three regions of potential geological hydrogen occurrences were selected: the Świeradów-Zdrój region in the Izera metamorphic complex, the Lądek-Zdrój region in the Orlica-Śnieżnik Dome (both regions associated with the occurrence of increased radioactive mineralization) and the Central Sudetic Ophiolites (SSO) underlying the Góry Sowie metamorphic complex (MKS). The mineral composition of Central Sudetic Ophiolites suggests that they could have generated hydrogen in the geological past. Currently, geophysical and geothermal data indicate that the optimal conditions for generating hydrogen in the serpentinization process exist in the rocki underlying the MKS. Estimated calculations were made of the amount of hydrogen potentially generated in the process of serpentinization of ultramafic rocks underlying the MKS.
