In the previous time the requirements on environmental safety, suitability and responsibility of buildings are increased. The design of such buildings means the targeted process by which the criteria of sustainable building design are regarded in each phase of building life cycle. The criteria of sustainability are included in the building environmental/sustainable assessment systems used world wide. The aim of these systems is evaluation of building performance and those are intended to foster more sustainable building design, construction and operation. The building environmental assessment systems cover not only environmental issues, but also involve a number of economical, social and cultural factors. In Slovakia the building environmental assessment and certification system is in process of development. The base of new system available in Slovak conditions is systems and methods used in many countries. The building environmental assessment fields and indicators are proposed on the base of available information analysis from environmental performance of buildings and also on the base of own experiences. The main fields are site selection, project planning and development; building construction; indoor environment; energy; water and waste. The proposal of building environmental assessment system applicable in Slovak conditions will be discussed in this paper.
