Feliks Pancer był wybitnym inżynierem swojej epoki i wizjonerem. Wybudował największy drewniany most łukowy w świecie w roku 1841.
Feliks Pancer was an prominent Polish engineer living in 1798-1851. He was famous for his innovative and courageous projects in those years. Three of his works provided him a worldwide recognition in the engineers society. Two of this projects were built: the bridge over the river Wieprz near Kośmin in 1841 and the viaduct within the exit to the Vistula river in Warsaw, which was later named after its designer. The bridge near Kośmian was a timber construction. It was a one-span structure with three wooden arches. The span was 76.80 m long – it was the world record in those times. Unfortunately, the timber construction was not protected against the weather influences and also the maintenance was not good enough. The construction was destroyed after 15 years. The Pacer Viaduct in Warsaw was built in 1844-1846. It was a brick structure consisting of seven arch vaults. The total length of the construction was 675.00 m. The viaduct connected the Old Town with the Kierbedź Bridge in 1864. Unfortunately that construction does not exist anymore. It was destroyed during the Second World War. The engineer’s third famous project has never been built. It is an extraordinary concept of a big arch bridge over the Vistula river in Warsaw developed in 1831. The span of the bridge was to be 576 m. The project, even after more than a hundred years, is quiet impressive and intrigues with its form and shape. The paper includes an analysis of this big arch bridge as compared to present regulations and requirements.
