Abstrakty
Two-dimensional Finite Element (FEM) simulation is presented for solid-liquid phase change controlled by natural convection and conduction. The algorithm is based on a combination of: (1) - the projection method that uncouples velocity and pressure calculations for incompressible fluid flow, (2) - a component-by-component time splitting to account for the most optimal discrete scheme for convection and diffusion, (3) - an enthalpy-porosity approach to model the latent heat effect on a fixed grid. Credibility of thus obtained numerical predictions is investigated through the verification and validation study of the computational model. Accuracy is verified through commonly used benchmark problems. A natural convection of freezing pure water is next calculated and the results obtained are compared with detailed experimental measurements available in literature. A range of congruity of the experimental and numerical results is thoroughly studied to find out their good agreement.
