The article is a review of the most important events from the history of magnetic recording starting with the inventrion of this method by V. Poulsen in the beginning of the century, and ending in the 1980s. The convention of the article, having a limited capacity, demanded a concise description of the different stages of development connected with the main application of the invention: the radio (acoustics), television and meteorology. The usage of Poulsen’s achievements in modern informatics was not discussed in the article. A special attention was made to the domestic output. All crucial details concerning the usage of magnetic recording is available in the annex.
