A student team from Cologne University of Applied Sciences participated in the 2013 International IEEE Future Energy Challenge. Finally, the team won the prize for the best control implementation, reasoned by the use of an FPGA for both controlling and modulating functionality. However, the price was won also reasoned by high motivation of the participants. During work on a common hardware students learned solving real-life problems of engineering including e.g. time and material delivery constraints. Furthermore, experiences in team work were gained yielding in the high degree of motivation. This paper should, besides the technical aspects, give hints on how to motivate students in project works. This paper is devided in two parts, i.e. technological part with focus on controls and an educational part.
