The Chinese - Russian military co-operation in the 90s of last century aroused an intense interest among political scientists. Questions concerning Beijing and Moscow's alliance were very often asked. The article presents many problem aspects of the military co-operation between Russia and China. Two reasons compelled Chinese authorities to co-operate first with the Soviet Union, and then with the Russian Federation. Firstly it was the willingness to modernise its own military forces, secondly - the international situation that developed after suppressing students demonstrations on July 4, 1989 and imposing an embargo on arms delivery to China by the Western European states and the USA. Russia, however, by successive contracts on arms deliveries to China saved its defence industry against bankruptcy. A closer military co-operation started in 1992 when the Russian side delivered 26 jet aircraft Su-27. In the successive years this favourable co-operation tightened: during President Putin's visit in Beijing in July 2000 both states signed a 15-yearplan of military co-operation development. Russian arms supplies and common endeavours in military production appeared very advantageous both for China and Russia as well.
