In the paper – based on short history of geotechnical tests conducted for assessment of in situ state of stress – collected formulas and procedures from literature for estimation of values of earth pressure coefficient in rest Ko are presented. Primary state of stress in subsoil is one of the most important factors which influence the interpretation of results of tests in the terrain; used for assessment of strength and deformability soil parameters in in-situ conditions. Described problems stem from the fact, that soil medium is a material with memory, for which, level of past loading is important, and the fact, that during state of stress change in soil caused by actual loading, side earth pressure coefficient also changes. Variation range of values of coefficient Ko based on some expressions presented in paper can be observed. From diagrams, it can be concluded that in case of overconsolidated soil, differences in values might be essential. Some of those situations are presented in numerical analyses; for the strip foundation and for soil pressure acting on the wall in mining area.
