In order to utilize the potential of algae as a source of biomass for energy purposes, suitable methods of cultivation have to be developed. Two types of algae cultivation systems are distinguished: natural, among which we include lakes, lagoons and ponds, and artificial: artificial open ponds and closed photobioreactors. Due to better controlling possibilities, only artificial systems are suitable for intensive cultivation of microalgal cultures.
