Tissue papers are still one of the most popular and widelyused types of. As a material used for the production of utilityproducts such as toilet paper, towels, handkerchiefs, industrialwipes and medical liners, it is present in our everydaylife in many forms. In 2021, in Poland, according to preliminary data from StatisticsPoland, a total of 5,219,000 tonnes of paper were produced,of which sanitary and hygienic papers accounted for 15,5%, which means a noticeable increase compared to theprevious year (16.3% in 2020) (fig. 1, 2). The sanitary and householdpaper production continued to exceeded the totalvolume of graphic paper production (their share dropped slightlyfrom 13.7% to 13.6%).Analysis of data from the Statistics Poland shows that toilet paper production in 2020 increased by 5.8% compared to 2019 (fig. 3).Kitchen towels production in 2020 increased drasticallycompared to 2019 – year to year change was –7.3% (fig. 4).The past year brought a partial normalization of the marketsituation, but it still differed from the years before thepandemic. The epidemiological situation in Poland and abroadcontinued to affect many aspects of paper mill operations.Compared to 2020, there were not as significant deviationsin production connected to successive waves of coronavirus, but production volumes were still much more volatile than in2019. A monthly production comparison for this group of papersis shown in Figure 5.Tissue market in Poland is strongly influenced by international trade. It should be noted that trade information is basedon preliminary data for 12 months of 2020.Similar to previous years the main receivers of Polish tissueproducts were Germany (51.6%), Czech Republic (14.5%), Netherlands(5.6%) and United Kingdom (5.6%) (fig. 6). Exportsin 2021 increased noticeably by 9.4% and reached 354 900tons, compared to 391 500 tons in 2020. This marks a returnto the production level from 2016.Figure 7 illustrates structure of exports for CN code group 4818. The biggest product group was toilet paper (33.5%),other towels (24.1%) and towels in rolls (20.8%). Germany is still the biggest importer of toilet paper (63.3%) and towels(52.0%) from Poland.Compared to 2020, the trade in hygiene papers looks morestable (fig. 8). No significant monthly deviations in export valueswere recorded, as was the case, for example, in preparationfor the first coronavirus wave.In 2020 most of tissue paper imports to Poland came fromGermany (20.4%), Russia (13.8%) and Italy (13.8%) (fig. 9).Compared to 2020 a significant drop of imports can be observed(9.0%). It should be noted that 2020 ended with 25.5%increase of imports. Among imported products the main were toilet paper(33.7%), towels in rolls (26.1%), other products (13.6%) andhandkerchiefs (9.3%). A noticeable change occurred in thecase of towels in rolls, whose share in imports fell by 2.7%,as well as other towels, which saw an increase of about 1.8%.Figure 10 shows the structure of imports in 2021.Last year brought a partial stabilization for hygienic and sanitary paper producers, however, disruptions in global supply chains translated into increased difficulties to obtain raw materials for production. These paper grades were also strongly impacted by rising energy costs and disruptions in transportation. There is no doubt that 2022 will be another challenging year for the industry.
