The contemporary sprawling and overgrown urban giants do not give man a chance to identify himself with the city. Therefore, out of necessity, man looks for a "city within a city", his own little fatherland which he would know inside out, remembering all its alterations and reconstructions as well as the people who died and were born here. Similarly as architecture itself, a city is an extremely complex set of various elements which are supposed to serve man, yet when the degree of complication, the size and volume become excessive, the situation gets out of control and the roles become reversed. Man cannot stand the gigantic and incomprehensible scale of the city giant, so either he surrenders to it, giving in to all kinds of phobias, or else he seals himself off in his own restricted world; he escapes into homself, so as to preserve at least the appearance of independence. There is not a single inhabitant of a big metropolis today who would take advantage of all the cultural and material benefits which participation in urban life can bring; there is not a citydweller who having experienced everything that a city can offer, would not like to flee from it. Even a high social and financial status cannot solve all the problems which the urban inferno brings along with it.
