Na przestrzeni wielu wieków historii szkła można odnaleźć przykłady wybitnych dzieł sztuki i zwyczajne przedmioty codziennego użytku. Niektóre z nich zachwycają bogatą formą i wysokim poziomem wykonania. Tego rodzaju ekstrawagancką ciekawostką były szklane meble produkowane w 2 połowie XIX w. przez brytyjską manufakturę szkła F. & C. Oslera oraz Manufakturę Szkła Baccarat, dla europejskich i orientalnych monarchów. Pełne przepychu wyrażonego w zdobionym szlifami szkle kryształowym, złoconym brązie i delikatnym aksamicie, wypełniały niewiarygodnie bogate rezydencje królów i maharadżów. Ich luksusowy charakter graniczył z funkcjonalnością, lecz nie można im odmówić elegancji i czaru, które pozwalają choć na chwilę przenieść się do świata z baśni tysiąca i jednej nocy. Artykuł zawiera opracowanie danych z książki autorstwa Jane Schadel Spillman pt. European glass furnishings for eastern palaces, The Corning Museum of Glass; Corning, New York 2006, towarzyszącej wystawie „Glass of the Maharajahs” (CMG, 2006), oraz artykułów składających się na tę książkę.

Throughout the centuries of glass history, we can find examples of outstanding works of art and ordinary objects of everyday use. Some of them impress with their rich form and high level of workmanship. This kind of extravagant curiosity was the glass furniture produced at the end of the 19th century by the British glass factory F. & C. Osler, and French The Compagnie des Verreries et Cristalleries de Baccarat for European and Oriental monarchs. Full of splendour, expressed in crystal glass, gilded bronze and delicate velvet decorated with ornaments, they filled the incredibly rich residences of kings and maharajas. Their thoroughly luxurious character borders on functionality, but they cannot be denied elegance and charm. They allows to move to the world from the fairy tales of a thousand and one nights at least for a moment. The article contains an elaboration of information from Jane Schadel Spillman’s book European glass furnishings for eastern palaces, The Corning Museum of Glass; Corning, New York 2006, accompanying the exhibition „Glass of the Maharajahs” (CMG, 2006), and articles that make up this book.
