Austrian Fortress Krakow, founded in the middle of the 19th century and extended till the First World War, was the largest fortified object in Central Europe. Till modern times about 120 fortified works, including 36 fortresses, were preserved, as well as many objects of the infrastructure, barracks, hospital, and even airport. The preserved fortifications of the old fortress create at the same time a serious problem for conservators: most often they are deserted, unused, robbed of the preserved elements of the original equipment. Still they constitute an extraordinary potential for a wise, intense utilisation for the needs of harmonious development of the city. They can be a great tourist attraction of Kraków. The fortifications can be adapted for the needs of exhibition - not only military one, widely understood needs of culture, tourism, but also for other utility functions for the city and region. The adaptation of the works of military architecture is, however, a difficult task, requiring the knowledge of specific conditioning made by untypical fortifying buildings. The aim of the study is a presentation of the possibilities of adaptation of Kraków's fortresses and the conservatory conditioning connected with it.
