One of the most popular electric machines in the world industry is an induction motor (IM). Due to simple construction its bearings are the part most susceptible to damage. Therefore, bearing diagnosis is very important in maintaining the driveline. Diagnostic of most parts of the IM through motor current signature analysis (MCSA) are already well described and used in the industry. As such, bearing diagnosis through MCSA would be very convenient from economic point of view. It would allow to reduce the cost of diagnostics through a diagnosis of all motor parts by measuring only one physical quantity. The objective of research that were carried out was to propose and test a new efficient MCSA bearings diagnostic method. The proposed method is the Normalized Triple Covariance (NTC). This higher order spectra signal processing technique is a new approach in IM bearings diagnostic with MCSA. Part I of the paper contains an introduction to the subject of bearing diagnostics, review of diagnostic methods and theoretical basis of the NTC. Part II covers experimental results of the proposed method and final conclusions.
