Kierunek Gospodarka Przestrzenna w Uniwersytecie Gdańskim powstał w 2008 r. i przez cały czas jest prowadzony przez Instytut Geografi i. Początki zajmowania się przez gdańskich geografów problematyką gospodarki morskiej sięgają jeszcze czasów sprzed powołania Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego i są związane z Katedrą Geografi i Wyższej Szkoły Handlu Morskiego w Sopocie, która następnie została przekształcona w Katedrę Geografii Ekonomicznej, a uczelnia w Wyższą Szkołę Ekonomiczną. W tej placówce pracowali tacy wybitni geografowie morza, jak prof. Jerzy Zaleski, dr Maciej Rozwadowski, dr Józef Adamczyk. Po powstaniu Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego geografi czne badania nad gospodarką morską były kontynuowane w Zakładzie Geografi i Gospodarki Morskiej, którego kontynuatorką jest Katedra Geografi i Rozwoju Regionalnego . Problematyką morską zajmują się także inne jednostki Instytutu Geografii.

Spatial Economy at the University of Gdansk was founded in 2008 and is run by the Institute of Geography. Currently maritime issues in teaching spatial management are included in three groups of subjects. The first one involves three compulsory subjects which are directly associated with the sea: Integrated management of the coastal zone, Planning and spatial development of sea regions and Spatial Economy in the coastal zone. The first two are implemented during undergraduate studies, the third one at the graduate level. The first emphasizes natural issues, the second the socio-economic one. The third one is the essence of the content covered in both of the former ones, highly enriched with elements of transportation. The second group of subjects consists of mandatory subjects related to maritime issues, although they are not directly linked to it. The third group comprises elective subjects directly related to maritime issues – at present there is one such subject on offer: Revitalization of coastal towns (undergraduate studies).
