EN

Thermal neutron absorption cross sections of rock and of all other borehole compounds have to be known for the quantitative interpretation of neutron porosity logs. The high neutron absorption of clay minerals can be correlated with the presence of highly absorbing impurities like boron or rare earths. An estimation of concentrations of these absorbers in clays can be deduced from the measurement of the absorption cross section. The problem of a heterogeneity of materials observed as centres of highly absorbing grains is pointed. In such heterogeneous material the absorption cross section can differ significantly from the value for the homogeneous medium built from the same components.
