Combination of isocyanates with hydroxy-functional polyacrylate dispersion

To prepare polyurethane coatings with high decorative and performance characteristics from 2K waterborne systems one has to find an optimal balance between the ease and the effectiveness of polyisocyanate addition to the polymeric dispersion (with allowance for possible hand mixing). This can be achieved using a mixture of low-viscosity hydrophobic polyisocyanate with hydrophilized isocyanate. The mixture of thereof must have the required rheological properties. To determine the correct polyisocyanate ratio we studied the rheological behavior of the mixtures of ion-modified hydrophilic high-viscosity oligoisocyanate and hydrophobic low-viscosity oligoisocyanate. The ratio of the hydrophilic to the hydrophobic isocyanate in the mixture necessary to provide its compatibility with the waterborne hydroxy-functional acrylate dispersion and to achieve the required performance characteristics of the polyurethane coating was determined.
