Noise is one of the most pervasive forms of environmental nuisance. Quiet areas are becoming rarer in most countries. While noise emanates from many different sources, transportation noise in general, and road traffic noise in particular, is perhaps the most widespread and difficult source to avoid in society today. Projected increases in road traffic volumes are expected to further worsen the noise pollution adjacent to roads. In the last few decades' several attempts have been made to mitigate the problem of road traffic noise e.g. noise walls, noise shields, façade, and window isolation as well as lownoise pavements. The available solutions all present serious disadvantages, difficulties or limitations in application with respect to technical and economical aspects. Low-noise pavements are generally more expensive to construct compared to standard pavements but are extremely cost effective over the service life of the pavement since they may reduce or exclude the application of costly noise barriers. This paper presents the major results from two lownoise test sections done by Skanska in Sweden and Denmark and includes practical knowledge and experiences with the use of this type of surface layers to limit and/or control the noise pollution caused by the road traffic. Series of different thin asphalt types have been developed and are presented in the paper, all based on a very small 6 mm maximum aggregate size, as this small size has been found to create the lowest level of "rumble" noise from passenger car tyres. The special noise reducing pavement type called SkanTOP XL SILENCE is also presented, that is considered as the "next generation" noise reducing SMA based pavement. It is indicated that low-noise durable pavements have the potential to be the most technical, aesthetic and economical noise abatement solution when compared to other measures.
