Praca O nauczaniu historii budowy miast. Rola dydaktyki w dziele Profesor Teresy Zarębskiej (1932–2003) przypomina sylwetkę wybitnej polskiej badaczki historii urbanistyki, na tle Jej działalności naukowej i dydaktycznej prowadzonej w latach 1964 –2003 na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Warszawskiej. Profesor była kontynuatorką dzieła wielkich poprzedników, urbanistów i historyków urbanistyki – Tadeusza Tołwińskiego i Wacława Ostrowskiego, którzy podobnie jak Profesor, łączyli działalność naukową z akademickim nauczaniem i uważali, że historia budowy miast jest propedeutyką projektowania urbanistycznego. Dorobek naukowy Profesor (ok. 100 opublikowanych prac, obejmujący 3 książki, monografie miast historycznych, artykuły naukowe i prace studialne) pozwolił Jej na wprowadzenie do wykładanego przedmiotu Historia Budowy Miast własnej interpretacji dziejów cywilizacji miejskiej. Pole działalności naukowej Profesor obejmowało wszystkie epoki historyczne. Wśród Jej badań szczególne miejsce zajmują prace dotyczące urbanistyki doby Renesansu oraz miast Antyku. Warszawie poświęciła około 20 prac, które dotyczyły historii struktury miasta od Średniowiecza, do doby współczesnej. Przez ponad czterdzieści lat działała w sferze ochrony miast zabytkowych, stając się niekwestionowanym autorytetem. Swoją wiedzą w tym zakresie dzieliła się ze studentami WAPW, prowadząc w latach 2000–2002 wykład fakultatywny „Tożsamość kulturowa miast a ich rewaloryzacja”. Profesor wychodziła z założenia, że istnienie miasta wiąże się z nieustającą wymianą jego tkanki. Aby zachować witalność ośrodka zabytkowego, nie można dopuścić do zakazu zmian w jego obrębie. Każda struktura historyczna ma indywidualne cechy, nie ma więc jednego „przepisu” na prawidłowe postępowanie w środowisku zabytkowym. Naczelną zasadą powinno być, co zwłaszcza dzisiaj wydaje się niezwykle ważne, a co postulowała Profesor wielokrotnie, koordynacja ochrony i rozwoju miasta zapewniona jedynie przez prawidłowo opracowany plan urbanistyczny poprzedzony waloryzacją i określeniem indywidualnych zasad ochrony. Po raz pierwszy prezentowane jest zestawienie prac Teresy Zarębskiej, zawarte w: Teresa Zarębska. Bibliografia prac opublikowanych oraz wybranych maszynopisów i opracowań urbanistycznych. Jako załącznik zamieszczono program przedmiotu Budowa Miast WAPW z 1915 r., w całości zacytowany.
The paper “On Teaching the History of the Building of Cities: The Role of Instruction in the Work of Professor Teresa Zarębska (1932–2003)” recalls the silhouette of a remarkable Polish researcher into the history of urban planning against the background of her scientific work and teaching over the years 1964–2003 at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. Professor Zarębska was a continuator of the work her great predecessors—urban planners and urban planning historians —Tadeusz Tołwiński and Wacław Ostrowski. Like them, Professor Zarębska combined scientific research with academic teaching and was of the view that the history of the building of cities is the propaedeutics of urban planning. The scientific achievements of Professor Zarębska (approximately 100 published works encompassing three books, monographs on historical cities, scientific articles, and study papers) allowed her to introduce her own interpretation of the history of urban civilization into the subject of her lectures—the History of the Building of Cities. The field of scientific inquiry of Professor Zarębska encompassed all historical eras. In her research, a special place was occupied by work devoted to the urban planning of Renaissance as well as of Ancient cities. She dedicated approximately twenty works to Warsaw. They looked at the history of the structure of the city from the Middle Ages up to today. For over forty years she was active in the realm of protecting historical cities, becoming an indisputable authority. She shared her knowledge with students of the Faculty of Architecture of Warsaw University of Technology conducting an elective course —The Cultural Identity of Cities and Their Revitalization— over the years 2000–2002. Professor Zarębska always assumed that the existence of cities is linked with their never– ending exchange of tissue. In order to maintain the vitality of a historical center no ban on change within its area can be allowed. Each and every historical structure has individual qualities. Thus, there is no single “recipe” for the proper treatment of a historical environment. The guiding principle should be “coordination of the protection and development of cites guarantied only by a properly designed urban plan” preceded by the valuation and identification of individual principles of protection. Especially today, this seems extremely important and it is what Professor Zarębska postulated many times over. The paper is the first to present the set of works by Teresa Zarębska as contained in “Teresa Zarębska. Bibliografia prac opublikowanych oraz wybranych maszynopisów i opracowań urbanistycznych” [Teresa Zarębska: A bibliography of published works and selected manuscripts as well as urban studies]. The program of the subject the Building of Cities of the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology from 1915 is included as an attachment. It is quoted in full.
