Graphic records of urban space in original applications

Taking the floor in the discussion, and joining the current of discussion about the problems of urban landscape composition, embraced in a slogan CITY WITHIN A CITY, the author presents three original applications which he has been an author or co-author of, i.e., one architecture contest design entry, and two projects regarding landscape planning based on an example of a village, and cities in Wielkopolska and Western Pomerania regions. The examples have been chosen primarily from the viewpoint of the applied urban design and composition, within the framework of conditions which exerted a strong and, in some cases, key influence on the final form of the designed space. The author worked on the premises of quoting examples of urban landscape based on William Morris' centripetal model, used in the authors' original applications with regard to medium and small size urban areas, as well to village areas. The underlying principle of the design applied here, was to arrive at a clear-cut and hierarchically congruent space arrangement. The main design task, on the other hand, was to cerate a crystallising central spaces, taking various forms (squares, market places) for areas under design, and to create an impression of growing intensity and coherence of urban architectural formations. Introducing new estates as areas into the existing urban landscape, based on a congruent centripetal composition used in the presented examples, allowed for creating new spatial values. What was achieved was completion and supplementing the existing urban network, and creating a certain type of interrelations (consonance) of the existing and originally designed urban spaces (for example, the cities of Stargard Szczeciński and Konin) or arriving at formal arrangements at a higher level of systematisation and hierarchy (which was the case with the village of Wiry). Architecture and urban forms of the designed areas take the form of miniature base models for estate urban planning. Thus, the designed areas are characterised by reasonable functional and spatial autonomy, stimulated by the properties and features of the applied architectural space composition.
