Abstrakty

We współczesnej literaturze poświęconej teorii wojen i historii myśli wojskowej od lat panuje moda na teorię wojny Carla von Clausewitza. Ten pruski generał najczęściej jest przedstawiany jako najważniejszy teoretyk zachodniej myśli wojskowej i jego poglądy uznaje się za punkt odniesienia w rozważaniach nad współczesnymi problemami w dziedzinie studiów strategicznych. W uznawaniu Clausewitza za ojca nowoczesnej strategii zbyt często ignoruje się fakt, że aż do końca XIX wieku nie on, lecz Antoine-Henri Jomini, jego główny rywal i konkurent do tego miana, był najpoczytniejszym i najbardziej opiniotwórczym autorem piszącym o wojnie. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przybliżenie życiorysu Jominiego, prezentacja podstawowych założeń jego teorii oraz próba pokazania, w jaki sposób on sam dbał o popularność.

For years in modern literature on the theory of war and the history of military thought, there has been a peculiar vogue for Carl von Clausewitz’s theory of war. He is usually presented as the most important theoretician of Western military thought and his ideas are generally considered as the benchmark when it comes to new challenges in the field of strategic studies. In proclaiming the Prussian theoretician as the father of the modern strategy scholars too often ignore the fact that until the end of the nineteenth century, not he, but Antoine-Henri Jomini, who was his main rival and competitor to this label, was the most read and opinion-forming author writing on war. Thus, the main goal of this paper is to present the short biography of Jomini, the basic concepts of his theory of war as well as an attempt to illustrate how his own efforts contributed to his celebrity status.
