„Antycedet” - in search of urban-forming residential architecture of the time of the thaw

„Antycedet”, with its iconic self-service bar „Praha”, was one of the first architectural developments in Warsaw after the political thaw of the mid-1950s. The complex of buildings between Aleje Jerozolimskie Street, Krucza, Nowogrodzka and Bracka Streets, with its striking ground floor and neon decoration, was an icon of 1960s Warsaw. It is the backdrop to a story of the modern city and metropolitan hustle and bustle of the 1970s. It was designed by Jan Bogusławski and Bohdan Gniewiewski at the Miastoprojekt Warszawa-Śródmieście design office. For many years, the “Praha” bar enjoyed great success, and still exists in the consciousness of the people of Warsaw as a place where you could eat cheaply and deliciously. The bar was closed down in the early 1990s. Then the rest of the building was rebuilt too. The first part of the article shows the history of the building’s creation, reception and functioning against the background of political, architectural and urban changes, while the second part describes the subsequent projects of the „Praha” restaurant and bar. The third part of the article attempts to reconstruct the design and decision-making process in the mid-1950s. The reconstruction includes a case study of documentation relating to one of the buildings in the complex, held in the State Archive in Warsaw.
