The article focuses on the issue related to the efficiency assessment of the energy technologies using fossil fuels. It presents the evaluation method which is based on Data Envelopment Analysis models, belonging to non-parametric methods of efficiency evaluation. DEA models, in recent years, gained great popularity in the energy industry. With the increasing popularity, also grow their capabilities. In recent years, in world literature, could be seen a number of articles on the subject of new DEA models developed for the needs of the energy industry. The most advanced methods, dedicated to assessing the energy-chemical coal processing, allow to calculate the efficiency from the point of view of many energy (coal, oil, gas, etc.) and non-energy (costs, expenditures, employment, etc.) inputs, taking into account both the desired (power , profits, etc.) and adverse (greenhouse gases, sludge, waste, etc.) results. This approach allows for obtaining a unified efficiency ratio and an indication of efficient technologies in relation to assessed group. Apart from showing the efficient objects, DEA models also suggest for inefficient objects a reference technology, which is a collection of technologically nearest efficient objects, which should be taken as an exemplary model. Information obtained from the analysis allows responsible for the strategy creation managers for making optimal decisions in order to efficiency improvement. This article provides an overview of the applied models.
